When Joseph Krug founded the House of Krug in 1843, driven by his understanding that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every year, regardless of annual climate variations. Every year since 1843, the House of Krug honours his dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne. Today, over one hundred and seventy-six years after Krug Grande Cuvée was first created, the House of Krug is delighted to present Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition.
Conversely, Krug Rosé is the emblem of the recreation of the highest expression of pleasure at each harvest. Combining elegance and finesse, Krug Rosé dances a perfect tango with savoury dishes of all kinds, replacing a good red wine at the table with brio. Best suited for unexpected food pairings, the wonderfully expressive glass rises to the challenge of the most daring and sumptuous combinations. This year, the House of Krug presents its latest and most unique Édition of Krug Rosé, Krug Rosé 26ème Édition.
KRUG GRANDE CUVÉE 170ÈME ÉDITION: A NEW ÉDITION OF THE FOUNDER’S DREAM
Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition is a blend of 195 wines from 12 different years, the youngest of which is from 2014, while the oldest dates back to 1998. Its final composition is 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Meunier. Reserve wines from the House’s extensive library made up 40% of the final blend. The Édition achieved its remarkable expression and elegance over a stay of around seven years in Krug’s cellars, and overall, 20 years of careful craftsmanship were needed for the 170th re-creation of the most generous expression of Champagne.
At first sight, a light golden colour with fine, vivacious bubbles holds a promise of pleasure. On the nose are the aromas of flowers in full bloom, as well as ripe, dried, and citrus fruits, marzipan, and gingerbread. The palate displays an alluring combination of hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar, jellied and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche, and honey. This Champagne can be thoroughly enjoyed as an aperitif, paired with the sharp and nutty tasting notes of Jabugo ham and mature Comté, or served to accompany seafood, Indian or Moroccan food, and desserts such as carrot cake, tarte tatin and cheesecake.
“Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition lends itself to a wealth of culinary combinations, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, from an aged parmesan to turbot à la truffe.”
-Eric Lebel, House of Krug Deputy Director & former Cellar Master
KRUG ROSÉ 26ÈME ÉDITION: A NEW ÉDITION OF THE FIFTH GENERATION’S DREAM
At first sight, Krug Rosé 26ème Édition is a blend of 28 wines from 7 different years, the youngest from 2014 and the oldest from 2005. Its final composition is 44% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 26% Meunier. It exudes a subtle pale pink colour that holds promise of elegance, whilst enticing the nose with aromas of rosehip, cured ham, mulberries, redcurrant, peony pepper and pink grapefruit.
On the palate, Krug Rosé delights with delicate flavours of honey, citrus and dried fruit with a long finish, enhanced by its fine bubbles. The addition of a traditionally macerated Pinot Noir red wine imparts a seductive hue, remarkable length and spiciness and allows the true character of the blend to develop, accentuated by fruits and flowers like violet, with beautiful vivacity. Unexpectedly, it best accompanies very savoury dishes – best enjoyed with foie gras, lamb, game, white meat, venison or even dishes with spices.
“What sets Krug Rosé apart is the surprising way it creates food harmonies where one would never expect to see a rosé Champagne, such as alongside earthy dishes or game. With its structure and rare elegance, it has a distinct Krug family resemblance and embodies Joseph Krug’s non-conformist spirit.”
-Julie Cavil, Cellar Master, House of Krug
