<<9th February, 2018 – Hong Kong>> In Spain, the beginning of a new calendar year is cause for another kind of celebration: la calçotada. A Catalan culinary tradition that translates to “the eating of the spring onion”, Spaniards across the country fire up charcoal grills and roast ripe, peculiar-looking vegetables until the outer layer is charred to black. These traditional regional vegetables, calçots, are similar to scallion and green onion, with the appearance of a large leek. Calçots are renowned for their soft, savoury bulbs, enjoyed customarily with a smoky tomato dip, grilled meats, potatoes and Cava or a medium-bodied bottle of red wine.

For the first time, La Paloma has brought this special Catalonian dish and the traditions around it to Hong Kong. Serving from now until the end of March, the new limited edition calçots menu by Head Chef Jose Cotes embraces the Catalan custom of enjoying grilled calçots alongside heartier dishes such as baked whole potatoes and a loaded grilled meat platter. For an additional +HK$350, guests celebrating la calçotada can share a bottle of Torelló Cava. Complete with a step-by-step guide on how to eat your calçot from peeling away the outer blackened leaves to dipping the bulb in a delicious homemade Salvichada sauce, La Paloma brings a truly authentic Spanish experience to the heart of Sai Ying Pun.

To wrap up the calçots season with a bang, La Paloma will host one special La Calçotada Brunch with the same menu on Saturday, 3 March from 12pm-3pm. Priced at only HK$350 per person with a complimentary glass of Torelló Cava, prepare your bibs for a messy yet raucously fun affair with plenty of calçots to dip and eat all afternoon long.
